Buddy Bench

Three caring fifth grade girls last year got together and wanted to do a GT project to make a difference at EES. Together they formed the Buddy Builders! They brainstormed and researched an idea to prevent bullying and encourage including all students. They found out about the Buddy Bench idea. Thanks to our generous PTA who funded their project, we now have a BUDDY BENCH located on our playground.

How does it work?

If a student doesn’t have someone to play with, he/she sits down on the bench. When other kids see the child alone on the bench they are motivated to invite him/her to join his/her group to play.  Or, when there are two or more students that sit on the bench, those students can play together. Please encourage your child to use the Buddy Bench during recess, or to be a caring student to invite other students to be his/her buddy.

Why the buddy bench?

The buddy bench idea was imported from Europe to the US when a student brought the idea to his principal. Now hundreds of schools have brought a buddy bench to their school to help encourage children to include everybody and to help socialization during recess.
