MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

What an amazing November! We have enjoyed a busy season including American Education Week, Madagascar Musical, The Turkey Trot, and parent conferences to name a few. I wanted to say thank you to the many Elkridge families that have been able to join us.   I know your children are especially appreciative of the time you take out of your routines to be a part of their school day.

I would like to congratulate our 5th graders for their performance of “Madagascar” on Wednesday and Thursday evenings! It was an excellent show and we are so proud of the performers.  A production like this takes a tremendous team effort to coordinate.  I would like to extend a big THANK YOU to Ms. Loughry, Ms. Cameron, Ms. Whitebloom, Mrs. Sloat, Ms. Green, and Ms Schwarzl for their instruction and guidance throughout the entire process.  A special thanks to the EES staff and PTA for all your support.

Michael Caldwell, Principal

CogAt Testing

This year, the Howard County Public School System will be administering the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) to all students in grades 3 and 5. The CogAT is a group-administered abilities test that measures students’ reasoning abilities, which they develop through in-school and out-of-school experiences. It is not designed to test a student’s academic achievement, but their potential.

The test is made of three batteries – Verbal, Quantitative, and Nonverbal. Each battery takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. The CogAT helps educators understand a student’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses and assists with adapting instruction to meet the needs and abilities of each student.

All students in Grades 3 and 5 will participate in the testing. The CogAT will be administered to students in grade 3 on December 3th, 5th and 11th. The CogAT will be administered to students in grade 5 on December 3rd, 6th and 7th. No special preparation is required. Just send your child to school ready to learn as you do daily.

The Gifted and Talented Education Program will use the data from the CogAT as one criterion for placement into fourth grade Gifted/Talented mathematics classes and middle school Gifted/Talented content classes. Students’ individual scores will be reported to parents in late February/early March.

Cold Weather Reminders

As our weather continues to get chillier, we find that many students are being dropped off prior to the start of the school day.  Please remember our doors open at 9:10am.  Students are not allowed in the building until this time.  The final bell rings at 9:25 am, both front doors are closed and students are marked tardy.  Any time after 9:25 am students are required to be signed into the school by a parent or guardian.  Please understand this is for both student safety and record keeping.  We appreciate your understanding and support.

It’s also a good time for a reminder about recess.  In accordance with the HCPSS Health and Wellness Policy we believe that outdoor exercise is a healthy and an important part of each day.  It provides a break from the regular school routine, a chance to get some outdoor air and an opportunity to run off excess energy to revitalize children and physically prepares them for additional learning throughout the school day.  Children should come prepared for outdoor recess every day and wear clothing that considers the season and outdoor conditions.  HCPSS guidelines are for students to have outdoor recess when the wind chill is at or above 20° F.

At times it is necessary to close or delay the start of schools due to weather conditions.  Please see the following link to find out procedures and resources you will need to know if a change occurs.  http://www.hcpss.org/schools/emergency-closings/
