LAST DAY OF SCHOOL UPDATE

In order to allow HCPSS families and staff to plan ahead, we wanted to provide this update regarding the last day of school for students. As of Monday, February 11, Howard County public schools have been closed due to inclement weather on four days this school year: November 15, January 14 and 30, and February 11. As a result, all four of the inclement weather make-up days reserved on the school calendar will be used. The last day of school is now scheduled to be Friday, June 21. The final three school days, June 19, 20 and 21, will dismiss 3 hours early. The updated HCPSS calendar is available online at https://www.hcpss.org/calendar/.

The opportunity for winter weather still lies ahead and additional inclement weather closing days may be required. However, there are no additional make-up days built into the Board of Education approved school calendar for the current school year. Maryland state law requires schools to be in session for a minimum of 180 days each year and waivers to this requirement must be approved by the Maryland State Board; these are not automatically granted even when a State of Emergency is in effect.

As winter progresses and should additional inclement weather days occur, the Board of Education will have discussions on how to proceed to account for those days. HCPSS will continue to update parents, staff and students on any further calendar adjustments.

TALENT SHOW

Please join us next Friday, February 22 for our annual Talent Show.  Tickets are $4.00 and can be purchased at the door.  The show begins at 6:00 pm and the cafeteria doors open at 5:45 pm.  Come and see our talented students here at EES! In addition to the show, our PTA will also have a bake sale throughout the evening.

MAP ASSESSMENTS

EES will continue to administer MAP assessments through the end of February for all students in grades 1 - 5.  The Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment is designed to measure a student’s academic achievement and growth over time in reading and mathematics. Together with other classroom-based information, MAP results can help teachers make instructional decisions that match the needs of each child.

MAP is a computer adaptive assessment. In a computer adaptive assessment, as a student responds to questions, the test responds to the student, adjusting up or down the difficulty of the questions presented to the student. This creates a personalized assessment for every student.

For more information on this assessment, please visit the following link https://www.hcpss.org/academics/testing/map-information/.  Please see the schedule below to determine when your child will be taking the assessment.   Some dates have changed due to school closings and delays.
