Music Recorders

Attention: 3rd and 4th Grade Parents:

As part of our HCPSS curriculum, all students in grades 3 & 4 will be playing soprano recorders in a unit that focuses on combining a variety of music skills that we have been practicing in class.

Options for obtaining recorders:

  1. Purchase a recorder from the school for $4.00.  This becomes your child’s recorder and can be brought home to practice.
  1. Use your recorder from last year (4th graders) or another recorder used by an older sibling, which can also be brought home for practice.
  1. Use a clean recorder in class each week – it will not be used only by your child, but will be sanitized between each use.  It cannot be brought home for practice.

Each child will be given a Recorder Karate music packet.  These will be given out in music class, along with recorders, when the unit begins in early February.  Please also provide a folder for your child.

If you plan to purchase a recorder, please order through school! You can order online at: .  You can also send in a check payable to Elkridge Elementary School for $4.00 (or cash) by January 25, 2019.

If your child already has a recorder, please send it in labeled with your child’s name to Ms. Loughry or Ms. Cameron by January 25, 2019.

Please contact me with any questions by email at  Attached is the information flyer that went home with students.

Howard County Public School System has joined with Smile Maryland to offer in-school dental care.  The mobile dentist is scheduled to come to Elkridge Elementary School on Wednesday January 30 and Thursday January 31, 2019.   A state licensed dentist will check your child's mouth and teeth and may provide a cleaning, x-rays, fluoride treatment, sealants and additional care such as fillings, placement of crowns over the teeth, pulpotomies, and extractions if needed/necessary.  A dental report card will be sent home with your child.  The provider will bill and collect payment from any Medicaid, insurance or other payer and you will be billed for and agree to pay any deductibles and/or copays.  If you would like your child to be seen by the dentist, please complete the Smile Maryland form (sent home with the students) and send back to school or you may sign up online at

We are in need of volunteers to help bring students to and from classrooms for dental checks.  If you are available to help, please contact Jennifer Tucker ( or Marianne Jones ( directly by e-mail.

The ongoing shutdown of the federal government has caused financial hardship for too many of our friends and neighbors. Additionally, we know that students are experiencing anxiety and fear for their family's financial situation. I wanted to let you know of a few supports that are in place to help at this time.

Howard County families who have lost pay due to the shutdown may immediately apply for the Free and Reduced-Priced Meals (FARMs) program and the HCPSS Food and Nutrition Office will determine their eligibility status within 24-48 hours. Families that would not ordinarily qualify for the FARMs program could be eligible for the remainder of the school year because of the current loss of income.

Families that are adversely impacted, including those who do not receive FARMs assistance, will have the remainder of the school year to pay off any meal balances incurred during the government shutdown.

Additionally, many students may be suffering fear or anxiety about their family’s current financial situation. Student Services staff at our school are prepared and available to assist students at any time during the school day. Additionally, numerous resources for families are identified on the HCPSS website, and other supports are available through the Howard County Department of Community Resources and Services.
